The Election Commission has directed district collectors to begin preparatory work for by-elections in five vacant Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies.

One vacancy is in Tiruchirappalli East. Chief Minister Vijay had won both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East in the Assembly election, and later resigned from the Tiruchirappalli East seat, leaving it vacant.

Four more seats—Perundurai, Madurantakam, Dharapuram and Ambasamudram—fell vacant after AIADMK MLAs who won from these constituencies resigned their posts and joined the TVK, following which the seats were declared vacant.

In this backdrop, election-related arrangements are being initiated in all five constituencies. Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik has written to the collectors of Tiruchirappalli, Erode, Chengalpattu, Tiruppur and Tirunelveli districts, and election officers have also been appointed for the constituencies.
