Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Monday launched the newly formed ‘Lion Woman’ Special Force in the state police, aimed at strengthening protection for women and children. Speaking at the inauguration in Chennai, he said atrocities against women would “never be tolerated” and promised stringent punishment for those who harass women.

The event was held at the Rajarathinam Stadium in Egmore, where senior officials including Chief Secretary Saikumar, DGP Mahesh Kumar Agarwal and Chennai Police Commissioner Amalraj received the Chief Minister. A contingent of women police personnel led by Kallakurichi SP Shanas Ilyas, along with the new force, presented a ceremonial parade.

During the programme, the Chief Minister unveiled the unit’s emblem featuring a lion and a woman, which was received by the force’s IG Bhavaneeswari. He also introduced a dedicated patrol vehicle for the unit and drove it as part of the launch.

Vijay said the commitment to women’s safety was not merely an election promise but a heartfelt assurance, and that the government was moving step by step to implement what it had pledged. He added that ensuring women and girl children live with confidence was a priority and described the new force as a first stage in that effort.

He also pointed to drug trafficking as a key factor linked to crimes against women and broader law-and-order issues, calling for the menace to be uprooted. Addressing the issue, he said, required not only policing but also social responsibility and personal discipline so that women can travel, study and work without fear.
