Sources in the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) say Chief Minister Vijay has decided that the party should not join the national-level INDIA alliance for the time being.

The INDIA bloc was formed ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election under the Congress to take on the BJP, with the DMK as a key constituent. After the Tamil Nadu Assembly election, several INDIA parties are said to have moved away from the DMK camp and extended support to the TVK government led by Vijay.

According to the sources, the Congress was the first to exit the DMK-led front and later joined the TVK cabinet, which has reportedly angered the DMK. In this backdrop, the DMK did not attend a recent national INDIA meeting in Delhi.

TVK leaders said the party received an invitation to participate in the INDIA meeting, but Vijay prefers to stay out for now. They claimed his approach is to maintain cordial ties and secure funds needed for Tamil Nadu, while taking on the BJP politically closer to the 2029 Lok Sabha election.

The sources also said Vijay is not interested in aiding the INDIA bloc’s national politics at this stage, and pointed to the first Rajya Sabha seat being given to the Congress. They added that the TVK plans to soon name its Tamil Nadu-level alliance with INDIA parties and take it forward politically.
