Former AIADMK minister Benjamin joined the DMK on June 10 at the party headquarters, Anna Arivalayam, in Chennai. He formally entered the party in the presence of DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
Benjamin had been a senior functionary in the AIADMK, serving as the Tiruvallur Central East district secretary. He had joined the AIADMK in 1988 and worked for about 15 years as the party’s Villivakkam union secretary.
He has also held civic posts in the Chennai Corporation, including councillor and deputy mayor. In the 2016 Assembly election, he won and later served as a minister during the AIADMK government.
In the 2021 Assembly election and the most recent Assembly election, he contested from the Maduravoyal constituency on the AIADMK ticket but was defeated. His move to the DMK marks a notable shift in his political journey.
