Chennai: Chief Minister Vijay has instructed officials in corporations and municipalities, including town planning officers, to function “honestly and independently,” according to sources.

After the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) came to power, the Municipal Administration department has been kept under the Chief Minister’s direct control, with no separate minister in charge. Several key posts—such as the department secretary, corporation commissioners, municipal commissioners and town planning officers—have reportedly seen transfers and fresh appointments.

At a review meeting on the department, the Chief Minister told officials that there would be no political interference from the TVK side. If any such pressure arises, he asked them to inform him through the department secretary.

He also cautioned officials not to bend rules to accommodate ministers or ruling party functionaries. If wrongdoing by officials is found, he said, action would be taken against those responsible.

Officials from the Municipal Administration department said work is under way to compile details of officers who may be involved in taking commissions, and that transfers across the state are expected soon based on the findings.
