The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast heavy rain for two days in parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in the Nilgiris and Kanyakumari districts, and in the hill areas of Coimbatore and Tirunelveli.
In its bulletin, the RMC said Tamil Nadu received rain at a few places in the last 24 hours, with the highest rainfall recorded at Neyyoor in Kanyakumari district at 9.35 cm.
The weather system is being influenced by two upper-air cyclonic circulations—one around 1.5 km above mean sea level over central-west and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh, and another around 3.12 km over south Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring areas.
For today, moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely at isolated places over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Villupuram, Kallakurichi and Cuddalore, and over Puducherry. Heavy rain with thunder and gusty winds may occur at isolated places in the Nilgiris and Kanyakumari, and in the hill areas of Coimbatore and Tirunelveli.
For tomorrow, similar moderate thundershowers are expected at isolated places over Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Theni and Tenkasi, and over Puducherry. Heavy rain with thunder and strong winds may occur at isolated places in the Nilgiris, Kanyakumari, Ranipet and Tiruvallur, and in the hill areas of Tirunelveli and Coimbatore. In Chennai, skies are likely to remain generally cloudy with light to moderate rain in a few areas; maximum temperature may be around 35–36°C and minimum around 28–29°C.
