New Delhi: The Supreme Court has said the work done by homemakers and domestic workers can be valued at up to Rs 30,000 per month, underscoring their contribution to society and the economy.

The observation came while delivering a judgment in a motor vehicle accident compensation matter. The court directed that, for calculating compensation, a minimum monthly income of Rs 30,000 should be taken for the work performed by a homemaker.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and N.K. Singh noted that such workers play a role in building the nation. It said cooking, childcare, elder care and household management are unique services that contribute to the country’s economy.

The bench added that homemakers should not be viewed merely as servants, and reiterated that their work supports the growth of humanity and the nation.
