Chennai: Former BJP Tamil Nadu state president K. Annamalai, who has quit the party, has launched an organisation named ‘We The Leader’ and is currently enrolling members. He is planning to convert the movement into a political party in September.
According to sources close to him, Annamalai believes the organisational model of national parties does not translate well on the ground in Tamil Nadu. He has earlier said that the “language” used by national parties is not easily understood by the people of the state.
To address this, he is said to be working on a party structure similar to the DMK and AIADMK model, with layers from ward, area, union and town levels up to district and state units. He is also seeking inputs on organisational practices through individuals who previously worked with Dravidian parties and have since stepped away from active politics.
The plan reportedly avoids appointing state-level general secretaries and state secretaries in the BJP style, and instead proposes regional secretaries. At the same time, the new party is expected to introduce limits on how long a person can hold a post and how many times one can contest elections, with consultations under way on these rules.
