Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay on Wednesday said his government would work with the Union government in a “constructive” manner while firmly safeguarding the state’s interests and people’s aspirations. He made the remarks at the NITI Aayog consultative meeting held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre in Delhi, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In his first participation at the forum, Vijay said Tamil Nadu continues to be India’s second-largest economy despite global economic uncertainty, and highlighted the state’s resilience and steady growth. He urged the Centre to support district-wise technology skill centres focused on artificial intelligence, deep tech, cloud computing and semiconductors, and to increase related funding.
On education and health, the Chief Minister sought permission to fill all seats under the state quota in MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses based on Class 12 public examination marks. He also said the state wants to advance a “Poverty-free Tamil Nadu Mission” and requested central assistance to ensure housing for all and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.
Vijay noted that 42% of women working in factories across India are employed in Tamil Nadu, and said central support is needed for the state’s “Singappen Special Action Force” launched to strengthen women’s safety. He also called on the Union government to protect Tamil Nadu fishermen’s fishing rights, secure the return of seized boats, and take steps to release fishermen held in prisons in Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
After the meeting, the Chief Minister met Prime Minister Modi separately and reiterated the same demands, seeking the Centre’s cooperation for Tamil Nadu’s development and the broader goal of achieving a developed India by 2047.
