Congress has appointed Dinesh, an ‘A+’ category history-sheeter from Kanchipuram, as the state vice-president of the party’s RTI wing. The move has drawn surprise and criticism locally.

According to police records, Dinesh emerged as a key figure after the death of notorious rowdy Sridhar in 2016. After Sridhar’s death, Dinesh—who had worked as his driver—led one faction, while Sridhar’s brother-in-law Thaniga led another.

The rivalry between the two groups reportedly led to repeated clashes and murder incidents. Dinesh is said to have more than 40 pending cases, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and extortion.

Police have previously arrested him and lodged him in prisons including those in Coimbatore and Salem. Following his appointment, posters were put up in Kanchipuram thanking the state RTI wing president Kanagaraju for the post, adding to the public reaction.
