CPI announces exit from DMK alliance
Coimbatore: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has announced that it is no longer part of the DMK alliance, state secretary Veerappandian said on Wednesday.
He noted that the CPI and the CPM are currently extending outside support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister Vijay. While both Left parties were part of the DMK alliance during the election, he said the present political situation does not allow the CPI to remain in that alliance.
Veerappandian also claimed that parties such as the Congress, VCK and the Muslim League, which were earlier in the DMK alliance, are no longer part of it and are now constituents of the TVK-led government. He said the CPI’s decision to withdraw was taken after two days of consultations.
Responding to DMK leader M.K. Stalin’s remarks, he said it was incorrect to claim that the DMK had sent alliance parties to support the TVK government. He described TVK as a “new democratic force” and said it may take time to fulfil its promises, but should not delay action on law and order, especially in cases affecting women and girls.
He added that if there were lapses during the previous DMK regime, the TVK government should take legal action. He also urged the Chief Minister to meet journalists, said working in coordination with the Union government is not wrong, and argued that Vijay’s criticism of “cash-box parties” does not apply to Communist parties.
