Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday alleged that the rejection of party candidate Meenakshi Natarajan’s nomination for the Rajya Sabha election from Madhya Pradesh was aimed at weakening the Congress.
Kharge said Natarajan’s nomination was rejected, and the Supreme Court dismissed the petition filed challenging the decision. He argued that the matter should have been taken up for relief at the apex court to avoid delays.
According to Kharge, the contention was that the Election Commission and then the High Court should be approached before moving the Supreme Court, which he said could prolong such disputes. He added that the Congress would now approach the High Court as directed.
Calling the rejection “illegal,” Kharge said it was not only against ethics but also against democracy. He further claimed such steps could not have been taken without the Prime Minister’s approval or guidance, and described it as part of a conspiracy to weaken the Congress and disrupt democratic processes.
He also alleged that the actions indicated an intent to harass and suppress opposition parties.
