Tambaram City Municipal Corporation has passed a resolution to rename the Tambaram–Velachery Road as “Major Mukund Varadarajan Road”, in memory of the Army officer who died in a terrorist attack.
Major Mukund Varadarajan, an Ashok Chakra awardee, hailed from East Tambaram, which falls under the corporation limits. His parents continue to reside there, the report said.
According to the corporation’s records, the proposal was initiated through a letter dated August 26, 2025 from the Directorate of Municipal Administration, seeking that a recommendation note be forwarded for the renaming.
Subsequently, the corporation sought approval from the Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department on September 19, 2025, citing provisions under the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998 and Rules, 2023 (Section 186). After a communication dated October 23, 2025 directing the corporation to pass a resolution and submit a report, the council approved the renaming in its meeting held yesterday.
