New York: U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that a secret military operation helped move more than 100 million barrels of crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz to the open market.
According to the report, shipping through the strategic waterway has been disrupted for over three months due to the war between the United States and Iran, leading to fuel shortages internationally.
Trump said that in early last month the U.S. launched an effort called “Project Freedom” to provide protection for commercial vessels, though it was reported to have been halted within a day.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, he said he had instructed the military to carry out a covert mission to protect oil tankers and merchant ships in the strait.
He claimed that the operation moved hundreds of thousands of barrels each night using around 200 ships, and alleged that Iran did not detect it because it lacked radar capability.
