Reports say DMK president M K Stalin has decided to increase the number of deputy general secretaries in the party, taking the posts from seven to 10.

At present, the deputy general secretaries include Kanimozhi, Periyasamy, Raja, Siva, Anthiyur Selvaraj, Ponmudi and Saminathan.

According to party functionaries quoted in the report, the move is aimed at providing representation to Muslims and Christians, and to communities such as Devendrakula Vellalar, Nadar and Naidu.

The functionaries said the party faced setbacks as religious and caste-based vote banks weakened, and pointed to Christian votes shifting away and the Muslim League—an ally for over 22 years—exiting the DMK alliance.

They added that the current list already reflects representation from several communities, and that the proposed expansion is intended to accommodate additional groups by adding three more deputy general secretary positions.
