Washington: A video posted by an American woman has gone viral after she said a medicine sold for about Rs 95,000 in the United States cost her only Rs 950 when obtained from India.
In the video shared on her Instagram account, Victoria said her health insurance company refused to pay for a drug prescribed by her doctor, leaving her to cover the cost herself.
She said she then contacted her doctor, who advised her to send the prescription to a pharmacy in Canada. According to Victoria, the pharmacy arranged the medicine from an Indian manufacturer.
Victoria said she initially expected the purchase to cost between Rs 10,000 and Rs 20,000. However, she was told the total would be Rs 2,400 including courier charges; excluding the courier fee of Rs 1,450, she said the medicine itself was priced at Rs 950.
Calling the US healthcare system “a joke,” she questioned where the extra money goes when the same medicine can be obtained for a fraction of the price. The viral clip has triggered heated online discussion about the American medical system.
