Coimbatore: Contractors have welcomed what they describe as a major change in Coimbatore Corporation’s tendering process, saying recent tenders were floated without any demand for commissions.
According to contractors, even though local bodies in Tamil Nadu use e-tendering for works funded through public money and state and central allocations, contracts were earlier allegedly awarded based on commissions, typically ranging from 10% to 20% depending on the project.
After the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government led by Chief Minister Vijay assumed office, it publicly stated that commissions were not required for government tenders. It also said no party or ministerial funds would be collected, and instructed bidders to quote the actual cost, ensure quality execution and complete works within the stipulated time.
In line with these directions, the Coimbatore Corporation recently invited tenders for upgrading Amma Unavagams. Many contractors participated, with several quoting up to 10% below the estimate.
Contractors said no political functionaries sought commissions and that the work is now being awarded to the lowest bidder, creating healthier competition. Corporation officials also said there was no political pressure and that if documents are in order, the lowest valid bidder would receive the work.
