At a Dinamalar higher-education guidance programme held in Chennai, education consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi advised students to be careful about both the college and the course they choose, especially in fast-changing fields like Computer Science and AI.
He said students should look beyond brand names and check the quality of coaching, past placement outcomes, the kind of advanced training offered, and the strength of industry tie-ups before finalising a college.
On AI, he noted that many students do not fully understand AI tools and should learn to build AI agents. He added that coding is not necessarily required to begin learning and that students can use online resources, but warned that pursuing computer engineering without learning such skills would be of little use.
He also pointed to new programmes emerging around electrical engineering and urged students to stay informed through newspapers rather than spending time on social media reels.
Gandhi said engineering admission cut-off marks are expected to reduce compared to last year. He cautioned that studying only conventional streams such as Computer Science, Electronics or ECE will not automatically guarantee jobs, and asked students to explore related new courses and choose accordingly.
