Tehran briefing on the deal
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has detailed what he described as the key features of a peace-related understanding with the United States, in an interview on Saturday.
60-day final talks and asset release
According to Araghchi, once a 14-point interim memorandum of understanding is signed, a first phase of “final talks” will begin for 60 days. During this period, the US is expected to gradually release Iranian assets that have been frozen, valued at Rs 2.28 lakh crore.
Next phase: nuclear programme and sanctions
He said a second phase would take up broader discussions, including Iran’s nuclear programme and the lifting of restrictions.
Uranium handling and sovereignty language
Araghchi said Iran would not send enriched uranium abroad, and would instead keep it inside the country and dilute it. He also claimed the US would, for the first time in 47 years, issue a written statement explicitly respecting the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Strait of Hormuz control
On the Strait of Hormuz, he said it would remain under the control of Iran and Oman, and that the US would not be able to control it.
