Chennai: DMK MP Kanimozhi on Saturday criticised the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, alleging it came to power by “building false narratives” that Tamil Nadu was unsafe for women.

Speaking at a consultative meeting of DMK’s women’s wing and women volunteers’ wing office-bearers, she said Chief Minister Vijay had, before coming to power, claimed women in the state lived in fear and uncertainty about what could happen the next day.

Kanimozhi also took aim at Vijay’s remarks at a NITI Aayog meeting in Delhi, where he reportedly highlighted that 42% of women in Tamil Nadu go to work. She said this was the result of DMK’s efforts and alleged the Chief Minister had not contributed to it.

Citing incidents after the change in government, she alleged that a TVK functionary in Salem had filmed around 50 women in an obscene manner and threatened them, and claimed the government was protecting him. She further alleged that women were subjected to sexual violence in Srivaikuntam with the support of a TVK MLA, and said the Chief Minister had not responded to crimes against women.

She also criticised the government for rebranding an existing “Pink Patrol” initiative by announcing it as a “Singappen Special Force” with stickers, and urged the administration to implement such measures properly.
