Madurai: Government targets drug culture

Minister Rajmohan on Saturday expressed confidence that a “drug-free Tamil Nadu” would emerge under Chief Minister Vijay’s administration, saying the government’s goal is to eradicate drug culture at its roots.

Speaking to reporters in Madurai, he described narcotics as a key driver behind many crimes and warned that addiction among children can lead to violent behaviour. He said multiple measures are being taken to eliminate drugs “root and soil,” and that seizures are continuing.

Rajmohan said that in the past week alone, the Tamil Nadu government has arrested 1,238 accused in connection with drug-related offences.

On schools, he said students cannot be allowed to wear caste identifiers or sacred threads, adding that existing practices in schools on the issue would continue. He also said vacancies in the School Education Department would be filled soon, and that training is being provided to teachers and officials on how to approach students.

He further said the government’s leadership is accountable to the people, and claimed his side has not spent years praising individuals, while asserting that Chief Minister Vijay has praised the public.
