Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), led by Rajya Sabha MP G.K. Vasan, has announced that it is leaving the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The decision was made after the party’s executive committee meeting held in Chennai on Saturday.
TMC has been part of the NDA since 2019. Vasan became a Rajya Sabha MP with the support of the AIADMK, and the party continued in the NDA even after the AIADMK exited the alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha election period.
In the recently concluded Assembly election, TMC contested five constituencies on the BJP’s lotus symbol. Party functionaries had raised objections at the time, and the party failed to win any seat.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Vasan said the party has no quarrel with the BJP, AIADMK or other allied parties, and that it does not intend to turn into a “fighting party” after defeat. He said the dominant view expressed in the meeting was that TMC should function with its own identity in Tamil Nadu at least until the local body elections.
Vasan said the party will focus on strengthening its organisation from cities to villages, arguing that 12 years of alliance politics had weakened its independent presence. He added that the party would consider alliances during election time, but until then would prioritise rebuilding its base.
