Washington: US President Donald Trump announced that a peace agreement between the United States and Iran will be signed on June 14. He said the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened to all immediately after the signing.
Trump criticised the earlier Iran deal reached under former President Barack Obama, claiming it would have made it easier for Iran to obtain nuclear weapons. He argued that, had that agreement continued, Iran would have acquired a nuclear weapon years ago and could have used it by now.
According to Trump, the new agreement is designed to ensure Iran never obtains a nuclear weapon—whether by purchase, domestic production, or any other means. He also said there would be no monetary transfers as part of the deal, unlike what he described as large sums provided under the previous administration.
Trump added that once the situation stabilises, the US would seize nuclear materials that are said to be buried deep under granite mountains, with support from B-2 bombers and pilots, and then neutralise and destroy them either in Iran or the United States.
He said the US looks forward to working with Iran and the wider Middle East in the long term, while warning that if the agreement does not materialise, the US has a final alternative option that he hopes will not be needed again.
