Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, who attended a recent NITI Aayog meeting in New Delhi, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and other Union ministers, according to political sources.
Sources said Vijay has decided to maintain a cooperative approach with the Union government and conveyed this to the Prime Minister. Modi is said to have taken special note of Vijay and assured that the Centre would extend all necessary assistance to Tamil Nadu.
At the same time, Vijay is also said to want to remain on friendly terms with the Congress, which supports his government. During his Delhi visit, he met Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Left leaders; Congress MP Praveen Chakravarthy, who is said to have entered Parliament with the backing of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, was present during the Sonia Gandhi meeting.
When Chakravarthy reportedly remarked that the Congress-led alliance would win the next Lok Sabha election and Rahul Gandhi would become Prime Minister, Sonia and Rahul were said to have been pleased, while Vijay remained silent. Delhi political circles interpret his approach as keeping ties with both the Centre and Congress in balance, and as a reason he has not spoken about joining the INDIA alliance.
