Hindu Munnani has urged the Tamil Nadu government to appoint spiritually minded individuals as trustees in temples where trustee posts are currently vacant.

In a statement, the organisation’s leader Kadeswara Subramaniyam referred to reports that non-hereditary trustees are to be appointed in 214 temples under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department. He said trustees should be capable of overseeing renovation works, financial management and basic facilities.

The statement alleged that in several temples, atheists are being appointed as trustees and that such appointees may not be familiar with temple customs and worship practices. It called for appointments to be made without discrimination and without bribery.

It further demanded that atheists, people with criminal backgrounds and those lacking good conduct should not be appointed. Temples, it said, are cultural centres and trustees should be people who understand cultural traditions and are involved in social service.
