Madurai’s Meenakshi Amman Temple has again come under scrutiny after a youth allegedly recorded a video on a mobile phone inside the premises and posted it as a social media “reel”, even though phones are barred for devotees.

The restriction was introduced after earlier incidents in the temple complex drew criticism. Following those episodes, the High Court banned devotees from carrying mobile phones inside, and the temple administration arranged a paid facility to deposit and safeguard phones.

Security checks at the entry points include armed police presence and metal detector screening before devotees are allowed in. However, Hindu organisations had recently alleged police negligence after a 16-year-old girl reportedly danced and released a reel from the temple’s Potramarai Kulam.

The latest video, said to have been shot at the same Potramarai Kulam to a film song, has renewed the controversy. Devotees questioned how a phone could be taken in despite checks and urged stronger monitoring in sensitive areas, calling on the HR&CE department and police to act firmly against such violations.
