Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday welcomed the peace agreement finalised between the United States and Iran, calling it an important step toward easing tensions in West Asia.

In a social media post, Modi noted that the regional strain had triggered severe economic disruption worldwide and led to loss of lives in several countries. He said the agreement aims to bring that phase of instability to an end.

The peace deal is scheduled to be signed in Switzerland on June 19. Modi said India believes effective implementation of the agreement can help restore peace and stability in the region.

He added that the deal could also support uninterrupted shipping and trade, and said India looks forward to further talks on remaining issues to reach a durable final settlement.
