Atlanta witnessed the first major surprise of the World Cup as Cape Verde held European champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in a Group H match.
Spain were widely expected to win and dominated possession, keeping the ball for 74% of the game while repeatedly pressing into Cape Verde’s penalty area. However, Cape Verde’s compact defending and disciplined shape denied Spain clear openings.
Goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, was the standout performer. In the first half he kept out efforts from Ferran Torres, Aymeric Laporte and Oyarzabal to ensure the teams went into the break level.
Spain continued to push after halftime, with young star Lamine Yamal also testing the keeper, but Vozinha remained firm. With neither side finding the net, the match ended goalless and both teams took one point each.
