Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge, a Congress leader, has written to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat seeking details on the organisation’s sources of income and related disclosures.
In his letter, Kharge congratulated the RSS on completing 100 years and asked for clarity on its legal status, registration and permissions for public activities. He also sought information on office-bearers and authorised representatives.
The minister further requested particulars of donations and income sources, expenditure and asset details, and evidence that taxes are being paid as required by law.
BJP Lok Sabha MP Tejasvi Surya said the RSS would respond and asserted that the organisation has worked for the country for 100 years. He also claimed that questions about the RSS had been raised earlier and that the organisation would grow stronger in Karnataka.
Bhagwat, in remarks quoted in the report, said there was no need to reply, arguing that many things in India are not registered and that the RSS is a recognised organisation. He added that registration is typically sought by groups that want government funding.
