Tehran: An India-flagged commercial vessel, the LNG carrier ‘Disha’, has safely transited the Strait of Hormuz despite a tense security situation in the region, reports said.

The development comes as the United States and Iran have reportedly reached an understanding in talks aimed at a peace agreement. Officials have indicated that the strait would be opened after the agreement is signed on June 19.

Even so, shipping movement through the Strait of Hormuz is said to have resumed. Within minutes of the reported US-Iran understanding, ‘Disha’, carrying liquefied natural gas (LNG), crossed the strait without incident.

The safe passage is being seen as a positive signal for other vessels planning to use the same route to Indian ports. Reports said 34 other commercial ships, flying Indian and foreign flags, are also scheduled to travel along this sea lane.

‘Disha’, carrying 62,370 tonnes of LNG, is expected to arrive at Dahej port in Gujarat’s Bharuch district on June 17. Separately, the Union Fertilisers Ministry said that among 16 key Indian ships affected in the region, eight are carrying urea, four are carrying di-ammonium phosphate, three are carrying sulphur, and one is carrying ammonia.
