The Madras High Court on Tuesday dismissed petitions filed against Chief Minister Vijay and Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi, which questioned alleged inconsistencies in their asset declarations submitted with election nomination papers.
In Vijay’s case, a voter from Perambur, Vignesh, approached the court citing differing asset figures mentioned in nomination documents for Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies. The petitioner sought directions to the Income Tax Department and the Election Commission to verify the authenticity of the declarations.
A similar petition was filed by Kumaran, a voter from Chepauk–Thiruvallikeni, alleging variations between Udhayanidhi’s current asset details and those filed during the 2021 election.
When the matters came up before a bench led by the Chief Justice, counsel for the Election Commission submitted that Vijay had already filed a corrected nomination and that the asset details were in order. The counsel also argued that such grievances should be raised before the Election Commission and noted that similar petitions had been dismissed earlier.
Accepting the submissions, the court dismissed the petitions against Vijay and Udhayanidhi. A separate petition filed against BJP candidate Tamilisai, who contested from Mylapore, was also dismissed.
