New Delhi: Indian oil companies imported 6 million barrels of crude oil from Nigeria between March and May, as global supplies faced disruption after Iran closed the Strait of Hormuz.

With shipments affected, Indian refiners have been diversifying sourcing routes to maintain steady crude inflows. In this period, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) together brought in the Nigerian volumes.

The crude was produced from Nigeria’s Akwa Ibom oil field and exported by the Nigerian firm SEEPCO. According to the report, the cargoes were transported to India via the Atlantic route, bypassing the Strait of Hormuz.

The move reflects efforts by Indian refiners to secure alternative supply lines amid geopolitical disruptions impacting international energy markets.
