Court declines to halt bypoll process

The Madras High Court on Tuesday ruled that a notification announcing by-elections cannot be stayed, in a case linked to four Assembly constituencies that fell vacant after AIADMK MLAs resigned.

According to the case details, the Election Commission has begun steps to conduct by-elections in the four constituencies vacated by the resignations of AIADMK MLAs D. Jayakumar, Maragatham Kumaravel, Sathyabama and Isakki Subbiah.

The AIADMK moved the High Court opposing the conduct of by-elections in these seats. The party also argued that the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker’s decision in the resignation matter was incorrect.

After hearing the matter, the High Court held that it cannot impose a ban on the by-election notification, allowing the election-related process to proceed.
