France produced a strong second-half display to defeat Senegal 3-1 in a Group I match of the World Cup football tournament in New Jersey, USA.

The first half ended goalless as Senegal’s disciplined defence kept France at bay and made it difficult for the favourites to find clear chances.

France broke through in the 66th minute when Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring. Bradley Barcola doubled the lead in the 82nd minute to put France in control.

In stoppage time, 18-year-old Ibrahim Mbaye pulled one back for Senegal in the 90+5th minute, briefly raising hopes. But Mbappe struck again a minute later (90+6) to make it 3-1 and confirm the result.

With his second goal, Mbappe registered his 58th international goal to become France’s all-time leading scorer. His overall World Cup tally also rose to 14 goals.
