A group of MDMK functionaries has submitted a letter expressing their willingness to join the DMK, sources said. However, the DMK leadership has reportedly asked them to wait until June 27, when the MDMK general council is scheduled to take a key decision.
The move comes amid internal discontent in the MDMK. Among those said to have expressed interest in joining the DMK are Kapilan, son of former MDMK treasurer Ganesamoorthy, and functionaries including T.R. Senguttuvan, Gopal, Alagusundaram, Sevanthiyappan, Veerabandiyan, Jaiprakash and Kazhagakumar.
According to the report, the DMK is keeping the group on a waiting list as the MDMK leadership has indicated that the June 27 meeting will decide whether the party continues in the DMK-led alliance or exits it.
MDMK dissidents said they had given a letter under Senguttuvan’s leadership, but Stalin advised them to wait until the MDMK general secretary Vaiko’s decision becomes clear after the general council.
Meanwhile, Minister Aadhav Arjuna visited Vaiko’s residence in Anna Nagar, Chennai, and held discussions with him.
