Tiruppur-based Hindu Munnani has alleged that Chief Minister Vijay is being pushed into a “communal trap” following remarks by Minister Shajahan on considering reservation for Muslims.
In a statement, state president Kadeswara Subramaniyam said the proposal amounted to disrespecting B.R. Ambedkar. He argued that reservations are meant for social justice and should not be framed on religious lines or used for political purposes.
The outfit cited past instances where courts, including High Courts and the Supreme Court, have stayed or restrained state moves that attempted to provide reservations on a religious basis. It also accused the Indian Union Muslim League of trying to create religious divisions.
Hindu Munnani demanded that CM Vijay publicly clarify the government’s position on the minister’s comments. It urged the government not to create a situation that could trigger conflict among backward and Scheduled communities.
The organisation said the Tamil Nadu government must respect the sentiments and rights of Hindus, and warned that if the minister’s claim is accurate, it would mobilise protests and pursue legal remedies through the courts.
