The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, has forecast heavy rain at isolated places across several districts of Tamil Nadu, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
In its bulletin, the weather office said rain has occurred at a few places in the state, with the highest rainfall recorded at Arattavadi in Tiruvannamalai district (12.52 cm). It attributed the conditions to a trough extending from east Vidarbha to Tamil Nadu at around 0.9 km altitude via Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Kerala at around 3.1 km.
For June 18, heavy rain with thunder and gusty winds (40–50 kmph) is likely at one or two places in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Erode, Namakkal, Tiruchirappalli, Karur, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Sivaganga, Ariyalur and Perambalur.
For June 19, similar conditions are expected at isolated places in Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Karur, Tiruchirappalli, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, and the Puducherry and Karaikal regions.
For Chennai, the sky is expected to be partly cloudy, with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms likely in a few parts of the city. The RMC also warned fishermen not to venture into the south Tamil Nadu coastal areas, the Gulf of Mannar and adjoining Kumari Sea on June 18 and 19 due to squally winds of 40–50 kmph, occasionally reaching 60 kmph.
