Chief Minister Vijay on Tuesday held a review meeting at the Secretariat in Chennai to discuss expanding the free travel scheme for women to all government buses.
Officials briefed the Chief Minister on the functioning of the Transport Department and the eight state transport corporations, which together operate 21,527 buses. They said around 2.05 crore passengers use these services, with women accounting for about 64% of travellers who avail free travel.
The meeting also discussed action plans to strengthen the state transport corporations. Among the key topics were extending the scheme beyond city buses, increasing the number of electric buses, and addressing issues faced by transport employees.
Further deliberations were held on measures aimed at improving overall service delivery under the Transport Department.
