The Delhi High Court on Thursday upheld the Union government’s decision to temporarily block the messaging app Telegram until the NEET re-examination process is completed.

The move followed rumours that the NEET re-test question paper was being sold through Telegram. The re-examination has been scheduled after complaints of a question paper leak in the medical entrance test held on June 3.

The Centre had ordered the app to be blocked until June 22. Telegram challenged the order in the Delhi High Court, which had earlier sought a response from the government.

In its submission, the Union government said Telegram posed a threat to national security and was being used to facilitate illegal activities such as terrorism, cybercrime, financial fraud and drug trafficking. After hearing the matter again, the court ruled that the temporary ban imposed until the NEET exam concludes was justified.
