A petition alleging horse-trading during the Tamil Nadu Assembly confidence vote against the Thaweka government was dismissed by the Supreme Court on Thursday (June 19).

The confidence motion was held on May 13, when the government led by Chief Minister Vijay secured the support of 144 MLAs and proved its majority.

The petitioner, K.K. Ramesh of Madurai, had approached the apex court seeking directions for a CBI investigation. He claimed that complaints had surfaced alleging horse-trading worth around Rs 1,000 crore among political parties to ensure victory in the vote.

The matter was heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice Suryakant and Justice V. Mohana. The judges said the issue could not be examined as a public interest litigation and dismissed the petition.
