Dhaka witnessed a torchlight procession by members of the Hindu community protesting an incident in which an image of Lord Ram was allegedly insulted.

The protest comes amid tensions over a plan to build what is described as the country’s largest Lord Ram statue. Temple authorities linked to the Sri Radha Govinda temple said they have been receiving threats from Muslim organisations opposing the project, and the statue’s construction has been temporarily halted.

Those opposing the statue were accused of insulting the deity’s image, triggering earlier student protests. Police attempts to stop that march reportedly led to a scuffle.

In the latest rally, participants carried torches and raised slogans of “Jai Sri Ram”, urging authorities to arrest those responsible for the alleged insult.

The developments have renewed concerns about the safety of Hindus living as a minority in Bangladesh.
