Chennai’s Egmore Museum is hosting a special display marking 75 years of the Tamil daily Dinamalar, featuring rare editions and archival material from the newspaper’s long journey since its launch in 1951 from Thiruvananthapuram.
The exhibit includes newspapers carrying speeches and messages from the early years after Independence, including those by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and President Rajendra Prasad. The display opened on Friday and will run until Sunday.
Visitors can also see special festival editions published on key occasions such as Independence Day, Republic Day, Pongal and Deepavali, along with curated news collections that document political and social events of their times.
Among the highlights are coverage related to the first Republic Day celebrations, the proposal to build the Gandhi Memorial at Kanyakumari, Nehru’s speeches, and special issues connected to the death of former Chief Minister M.G.R.
The newspaper display is part of the “Hobby Thiruvizha – 2026” antiques exhibition organised by Gandhi World Foundation and Hobby Talks. Spread across more than 60 stalls, the event showcases rare collectibles reflecting art, culture, history and scientific progress, including old coins, wall clocks, sports equipment, lamps and vintage electrical items.
