Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said Northeast India, once seen as a symbol of backwardness during the Congress era, has now emerged as a “gateway to progress”. He made the remarks at a welfare programme launch event in Mayurbhanj, Odisha.
President Droupadi Murmu attended the programme along with the Prime Minister. Modi said it was a matter of pride that “Odisha’s daughter” is guiding the nation from the country’s highest constitutional post, adding that she has strengthened the identity of both Mayurbhanj and Odisha.
Modi said the day was special for him as he got the opportunity to visit Murmu’s village and convey birthday wishes. He also said he visited a local school and spent time with children, describing it as a memorable experience and “a day of learning”.
Highlighting the Centre’s focus on eastern India, Modi said the government is working under the “Purvodaya” policy and sees the development of the Northeast as key to building India. He added that several major development projects related to Odisha were launched and foundation stones laid at the event.
According to Modi, around Rs 47,000 crore will be spent on these projects.
