The Muslim League has announced its formal exit from the DMK alliance, ending an association that had lasted for more than 60 years.
In the recent Assembly election, the party contested as part of the DMK-led front and won in two constituencies. After the polls resulted in a hung Assembly, the Muslim League declared support for the TAVEK government, and its leader Shajahan was included in the Cabinet.
The post-election shift triggered sharp exchanges on social media between DMK and Muslim League leaders, with both sides trading strong criticism over the decision to back the TAVEK administration and accept a ministerial berth.
The withdrawal decision was taken at a state committee meeting held in Chennai under party president Kader Moideen. This is the first time the Muslim League has moved out of the DMK alliance, the party said.
