Indian Railways will increase the fine for passengers travelling without a valid ticket on trains, raising it from Rs 250 to Rs 500 from July 1, according to officials.
Railway authorities said the penalty is collected along with the applicable ticket fare when a passenger is found travelling without proper authorisation.
The move comes as passenger services remain heavily used nationwide, with more than 2.5 crore people travelling daily across about 13,000 passenger trains.
Officials added that instructions have been issued to all railway zones to implement the revised penalty from July 1.
