Muslim League announces exit

The Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has officially announced that it is ending its alliance with the DMK after a relationship that lasted around six decades. The decision was conveyed by the party’s national president, Kader Mohideen.

Resolution passed at Royapuram meet

At the party’s state general council meeting held in Royapuram, Chennai, attended by state and district functionaries and leaders of 10 affiliated organisations, a resolution said the IUML had supported the formation of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government in line with the people’s mandate. It added that the party is part of the government led by Chief Minister Vijay.

Support to TVK and future alliance call

Speaking after the meeting, Kader Mohideen said the party had expected the DMK to win the Assembly election and for M.K. Stalin to return as Chief Minister, but the DMK lost. He said the IUML extended unconditional support to TVK to prevent a situation that could lead to Governor’s rule in Tamil Nadu.

Elections ahead

The resolution stated that the party would decide on its electoral alliance after bypolls and local body elections are announced. Kader Mohideen also said the IUML would continue to travel with TVK in upcoming elections, including bypolls, local body polls and the Lok Sabha election.

DMK alliance under strain

The report noted that after the DMK’s defeat, several parties that were part of its alliance—such as the Congress, VCK, CPI(M) and CPI—have moved closer to supporting the TVK government, with the Congress exiting immediately after results. It also said there is speculation that MDMK leader Vaiko may leave the DMK alliance, while DMDK has not yet clarified its stand.
