CPI(M) state secretary Shanmugam on Friday said resigned AIADMK MLAs should not be inducted into TVK, and that politics driven by by-elections should not be encouraged.

Speaking at Tiruppuvanam, he also called for the state to take over and run mineral resources such as sand and granite, arguing that this would generate revenue for the government.

Shanmugam linked sexual violence against women and children to the spread of narcotics, and urged a decisive end to the “drug culture”. He demanded fast-track courts to deal with cases against those involved in selling narcotic substances.

Referring to Chief Minister Vijay’s claim that government revenue diverted through other routes during the DMK regime had been brought back to the treasury, Shanmugam said it was unclear what kind of revenue was being referred to and that details may emerge in the financial statement.

He said various allegations had surfaced over the CPI(M)’s support to TVK. He also warned that if Vijay’s party does not secure a majority, Governor’s rule could follow, which he claimed would effectively mean BJP rule, adding that the CPI(M) would not act irresponsibly on its support.
