Chennai: The Railway Board has revised penalties under the Railway Act, increasing fines for a range of violations. The maximum penalty has been raised from Rs 500 to as high as Rs 5,000, officials said.
As per the updated provisions, unauthorised travel in reserved coaches will attract a fine of Rs 2,000. Men found travelling in coaches earmarked for women will be fined Rs 2,500.
The Railways will also impose a Rs 2,000 fine for smoking on trains.
In addition, selling goods at railway stations without permission will invite a Rs 2,000 penalty. If the offender refuses to pay, authorities may pursue recovery through court, with fines going up to Rs 5,000.
The new rules will come into force from the 1st of next month, the Railways announced.
