CPM state secretary Shanmugam on Sunday said the Tamil Nadu government should not accept the amendment moved by the DMK to the Assembly resolution passed against Karnataka’s attempt to build a dam at Mekedatu.
Speaking at a meeting in Nachiyapuram in Sivaganga district, he said that if such an amendment is brought, the Chief Minister should not accept it and the matter must be stated openly on the floor of the Assembly.
Shanmugam referred to Karnataka’s claim that it plans to store 47 TMC of water at Mekedatu and that Tamil Nadu would receive water once the reservoir fills. He said that, as per a Supreme Court verdict, permission to build the dam cannot be granted until 2033, and even after that, no construction across the Cauvery should be taken up without the consent of downstream states.
He also pointed to a letter sent to the Union government on March 4, 2026 by the then DMK government, and demanded that the details contained in it be made public. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to handle the Mekedatu issue with caution and restraint.
