Chennai Police and the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) have launched an inquiry into allegations that a woman police inspector and her associate used money collected through a fraud to run a stone quarry and construct a marriage hall.

The inspector, identified as Sheila Mary (49), had served at the Tiruvottiyur All Women Police Station in 2023 and was later working at the Royapuram All Women Police Station. Police say she, along with Prabhu Mani (37) of Kodungaiyur, allegedly collected up to ₹20 crore from police officers, personnel and their family members by promising gold at discounted rates.

According to investigators, the duo allegedly claimed they could procure gold coins said to have been seized by the Customs Department and offered them at lower prices. Police also allege that a government-issued police vehicle was used as part of the operation.

Following the complaint, Sheila Mary has been placed under suspension, while Prabhu Mani has been arrested by the EOW. Authorities are now examining the assets acquired by the two, including information suggesting the fraud proceeds were used to operate a stone quarry and build a marriage hall, and the probe is continuing.
